When converting a Word document to a PDF, tables, fonts and page layouts are all retained. Acrobat X is a good upgrade, which I use in my current job. Acrobat XI Pro by Adobe. With the beta I tested the results were mixed, but usable overall.

Adobe Acrobat XI Pro is a handy environment for managing PDF documents with support for creating, editing, and formatting PDF files instantly. New annual and month-to-month subscription plans make Acrobat DC more affordable than ever, while also giving you access to premium Adobe Document Cloud. Acrobat is the defacto portable document sharing standard. It is lightweight, scale able to any output device and anyone can read it. I still like version 9’s.
